Early Morning

by Equestriangradstudent

Tomorrow is the last day I will have to wake up at four thirty. That’s not the earliest I’ve had to get up, but it is definitely wearing on me nonetheless. Summer was the worst, waking up at three o’clock. There is no logical reason to be awake that early, unless there is a horse show to prep for. School is not a horse show, and yet I find myself getting less sleep that I would if I were grooming at Devon. For NO REASON.

I’m exhausted. I’m beyond the point of caring. I just want to cry. It’s inhuman, having to wake up before the sun. And yet I’ve been doing it, day after day, for the last year and a half. But I’m almost free! I will no longer have to be the one to turn on all the lights. I won’t be the first vehicle to arrive on campus. It’s someone else’s turn now. Fare well, brave soul, I do not envy you.

Even though I won’t have such a horrid schedule next quarter, I can’t help wondering if I made the wrong decision in choosing to stay. Renee was calling about jobs this evening, and while it sounded stressful and anger-causing, I still envied her a bit. She gets to leave this place, with no pastures or hacking fields. Or really any land to ride on at all. Good lord, she could have an actual work routine with actual variations. Yep, definitely jealous. But back to the topic at hand…

It’s not just getting up so early that wears on me. It’s being on campus with no breaks for fourteen hours straight. When I write my schedule out, it doesn’t seem that bad.

6:30 – 7:30 Morning Feed Class

8:00 – 10:00 Training Class

10:15 – 12:15 Free Block (Teaching IV only meets Wednesdays)

1:00 – 2:00 Dressage Class

3:00 – 4:00 Jumping Class

6:00 – 7:00 Teach a Training Class

But in reality, there are so many little things I do in between that make my day seem impossible to get through. Now let’s put those in the schedule.

4:45 Arrive on campus. Turn out two horses, Clean two stalls

6:30 – 7:30 Morning Feed Class

7:30 Eat breakfast. Complain about stupid girl in feed class who never does anything right. Go to training early to get a seat.

8:00 – 10:00 Training Class. Work a horse in second block (8:40 – 9:20).

10:00 Jump setup. Required only because Jenny complains that we do nothing. Nancy doesn’t actually factor it into our grades.

10:15 – 12:15 Free Block (Teaching IV only meets Wednesdays).

10:20 Go to office to check mail, horse health slips. Check in with John. Scrub buckets, groom horses, massage Abs is time allows.

11:00 Untack for Jenny

11:30 Eat lunch. Pick up Sam’s lunch.

11:45 Tack up Sam’s staff class horse

12:15 – 12:40 Watch staff class. Complain with Renee and Sarah about our day and stupid people on campus.

12:40 Tack up for dressage

1:00 – 2:00 Dressage Class

2:15 – 2:40 Observe a class for teaching hours

2:40 Tack up for jumping

3:00 – 4:00 Jumping Class

4:15 Observe two classes for teaching hours

6:00 – 7:00 Teach a Training Class

7:00 Go bother Renee’s barn class and hope she finished on time

7:15 Finally head home, exhausted and sour. Watch a movie and eat dinner with Renee

8:30 Run Renee back to her dorm, get ready for bed

Exciting life, ey? Each quarter my schedule got progressively worse, so I can only pray that next quarter will be different. Which I’ve done before. But now it’s past my bedtime, so I’ll leave you with that depressing thought.
